APPLIANCE FAULT & SAFETY GUIDE

Gas compliance and authorised work

A gas Certificate of Conformity (CoC) is a formal compliance document associated with gas installation work under applicable South African requirements. It is not a generic receipt, manufacturer warranty or proof that every appliance will never fail. The issuing practitioner must be properly registered and authorised for the relevant gas type and scope of work.

When installation work is involved

New gas installations and qualifying alterations to existing installations can trigger compliance obligations. The precise requirements depend on the work, applicable regulations and the practitioner’s registration scope. A technician who replaces a user-accessible knob is not automatically performing the same regulated work as someone altering a gas supply line or moving a fixed hob. Ask what work is being proposed and what documentation applies.

Check a practitioner’s credentials

The SAQCC Gas registration system identifies practitioners and their approved categories. Registration in one discipline or for a restricted scope must not be represented as permission to perform all forms of gas work. Customers can ask for the practitioner’s registration details and verify the relevance of their category to the proposed installation or alteration. A website claim alone is not an adequate substitute.

Understand what the certificate covers

A CoC relates to the installation inspected or completed and the relevant standards at that time; it does not guarantee future performance, protect against unapproved modifications or replace maintenance. If an installation is subsequently changed, do not assume the old documentation still covers the new arrangement. Keep the certificate and work description with property records for future owners and inspections.

How our booking process handles compliance

When requesting installation, modification or a safety assessment, describe the existing appliance, the desired changes and any documentation you hold. We will discuss the scope and ensure regulated work is referred to an appropriately registered practitioner. We do not publish a registration number or promise CoC issuance until the specific practitioner and category are confirmed. Reference: SAQCC Gas at saqccgas.co.za.

Keep documentation tied to the actual work

A property owner may hold paperwork for a cylinder installation, hob connection or earlier heater fitting. The existence of one certificate should not be presented as coverage for unrelated or later alterations. When discussing a proposed repair, ask exactly which parts of the installation are changing and whether a fresh compliance process is required. A practitioner should be able to describe the scope of their registration and explain the document issued for the work where legally applicable.

Common misunderstandings about registration

A business can advertise several gas services without every individual worker being authorised to perform each regulated operation. Customers should verify the registration of the person responsible for relevant installation work, not simply a business logo or trade association image. Likewise, an appliance manufacturer’s guarantee and a gas installation CoC serve different purposes. For official definitions and verification resources, refer to SAQCC Gas and relevant South African gas installation requirements.

Questions about this service

No. It documents relevant installation compliance; appliances still require appropriate use and servicing.

Can any plumber or electrician issue a gas CoC?

No. The issuer must be appropriately authorised and registered for the relevant gas work.

Does an old CoC automatically cover a moved gas hob?

No. A changed installation may require a new compliance assessment and documentation.
