APPLIANCE FAULT & SAFETY GUIDE

Burner flame supervision

A burner that ignites but will not remain alight needs more careful evaluation than a burner that merely takes a moment to light. Many appliances are designed to stop gas flow if their safety system cannot establish that a flame is present. That protective function must not be bypassed, even when the cooker seems otherwise usable.

Why flame supervision matters

Some stoves use thermocouples, flame-failure valves or electronically monitored ignition depending on the model. These systems are intended to prevent uncontrolled gas flow when the flame disappears. Failure to keep a flame established can relate to a defective component or a burner/flame condition that prevents correct sensing. No conclusion should be drawn from the time the knob is held alone.

Temperature and burner behaviour

A flame that drops out only at the lowest setting presents a different clue from one that goes out regardless of setting. Irregular flame distribution, damage to a burner cap or contamination near a sensor can change how the system operates. If flames appear yellow, lift away from the ports or produce soot, stop using the affected burner and have combustion conditions assessed.

What not to do

Never wedge, tape or hold a control in the operating position to defeat automatic gas shutoff. Do not remove a sensor, alter gas injectors or substitute incompatible parts. Those actions could allow gas to flow without a stable flame. If you detect gas odour, move people to safety and contact the supplier or emergency service from outside the affected space.

Useful information for a diagnosis

State whether the appliance is a standalone cooker or built-in hob; which burner fails; whether the flame stays on at some settings; and whether the fault followed cleaning or servicing. The technician will then determine if the issue is a burner assembly, sensing device, control or approved gas-side part. Repair work should be followed by appropriate safety and performance checks.

How the sequence of failure helps

When arranging an assessment, distinguish between an appliance that never holds a flame and one that operates for several minutes before going out. The latter may require observation of temperature effects, air movement or a control responding under operation. An appliance which extinguishes only when cookware is placed over the ring is another distinct report. These are useful details for a technician but not reasons to defeat the flame-failure system or to keep relighting a burner that does not remain stable.

Replacing components responsibly

A superficially similar sensor or valve from another model may not deliver the intended safety function. Replacement decisions should use the appliance’s specifications and an inspection of the complete flame path. After work, the professional should verify that the burner can establish and hold a normal flame and that the protective shutoff functions as designed. If suitable parts cannot be sourced, the repair conversation may need to shift towards approved appliance replacement rather than improvising a workaround.

Questions about this service

Can I disconnect the flame-failure sensor?

No. Flame supervision is a gas safety feature and must not be bypassed.

Why does only the small burner fail?

Individual burners may have different controls and hardware; a single-burner fault needs its own diagnosis.

Could a new knob fix it?

Only if the control is actually faulty. The symptom alone cannot identify a safe replacement part.
